Hi,

two ideas from our experience:

1) Keep the root partition for read-only stuff and use several partitions 
for everything else, like this:

/
/tmp
/var
...

2) Use a terminal/console server (like a Cisco 2511) and redirect the 
console to the serial port on each servers
