you'll have to excuse me, i didn't know if i was filling the list with garbage so i wanted to keep it short, but i will explain the problem and my workaround: Acer P90 (2years old) 64megs of ram SB16-SCSI NE2000 4.3gig IBM EIDE drive (very new) the bios didn't support drives larger than aprox 1 GIG and for some reason unless a the boot manager that came with the drive was installed via MS-DOS, FreeBSD would not detect the Drive controller* (see end) after installing freebsd i selected "use entire disk" and "non-compadible partition" then the machine would not boot, period, nothing, nada :) basically it would lock up after the bios displayed the system contents. the fix was: 1) reinstall the boot manager (killed FreeBSD) 2) reboot with the freebsd floppie 3) do NOT use the "incompadible" partition 4) do NOT install any sort of boot manager, leave the MBR unmolested 5) proceed with the install *i have a keyboard/monitor switch that a use to share a single monitor and keyboard among 2 machines, for some reason i suspect that MAYBE it wasn't detecting the hard drive controller because while the kernel and BIOS were booting i was toggled to the other machine checking e-mail. maybe this fubarred something, but i don't know and everything works now... ._________________________________________ __ _ |Alfred Perlstein - Programming & SysAdmin for hire... |perlsta@sunyit.edu |http://www.cs.sunyit.edu/~perlsta : ---"Have you seen my FreeBSD tatoo?"
