I remember I ran into this problem when I was first setting up my laptop
(a few months back), but unfortunately, I don't remember exactly how I
solved it.

I get the feeling you might have hardcoded your ed0 device entry in your
kernel config though. What does your entry look like?

I just have:

  device ed

And my DFE-650 is recognized as ed0.
