NSS stands for "Name Service Switch" NSS is implemented in Solaris 2.5 and glibc2. Some NSS info is available at http://www.rage.net/ldap/nss.shtml If FreeBSD had NSS it would be possible to use LDAP server (OpenLDAP) + nss_ldap instead of NIS.
