ah, I'm sorry. NSS stands for "Name Service Switch"
NSS is implemented in Solaris 2.5 and glibc2.
Some NSS info is available at

If FreeBSD had NSS it would be possible to use LDAP server
(OpenLDAP) + nss_ldap instead of NIS.

LDAP + pam_ldap partially solve this problem but LDAP + nss_ldap is much
better solution.
