I see this error message on NetBSD-1.5.* too, in -current it is fixed. The reason there is some internal misunderstanding (ISDN vs. sync cards like lmc) of the if_spppsubr.c API. In this case the message is harmless and can be ignored. Since that part of the code diverged a lot between NetBSD and FreeBSD, I do not know if the same applies to you.
