Is it possible to run freebsd on those. it depends on the version of the Cobalt's. RaQ2 and before had mips processors. I don't think that freebsd will run on them. RaQ3 and later have "normal" i386 architecture so it should work. Please be aware that cobalt has some strange booting recommendations. A fellow installed netbsd on a raq2 and had to format the root Partition with ext2 filesystem and so on.
