When you typed the first "^\", vi was in cbreak mode (the application was interpreting all characters). But that first one put you into the ex editor, which runs with the O/S doing line buffering of input characters. In line buffer mode, the regular (stty set) characters work, and "^\" is the "quit" character. That character requests the program to exit with a core file.
