  MFC (from src/sys/conf/kern.post.mk 1.7 -> 1.9)
  Use make -V VARIABLE | xargs ... to pass argument lists to program
  so that this is safe even if VARIABLE is longer than kern.argmax.
  
  The same should be done to Makefile.pc98 and Makefile.alpha,
  but i cannot do it for lack of suitable test environment.
