Ah, I see what I did wrong now. When I created the filesystem on wd0s3 using sysinstall, I told it the mountpoint would be /new-root, which was what I would mount it as temporarily, to copy stuff across. So, in the list it appeared as wd0s3c so I blindly used that instead of wd0s3a.
