1. Make sure that "hosts" is before "bind" in /etc/host.conf

2. Make sure that every host on the local network is refered to in
/etc/hosts in every possible form, e.g.:

10.1.2.1  ws1.home.smlt.com.  ws1.home.smlt.com  ws1
10.1.2.2  ws2.home.smlt.com.  ws2.home.smlt.com  ws2

3. Make sure that "domain" is correct in /etc/resolv.conf. It should
probably be
  domain  home.smlt.com
in your case.
