^Triage: a problem with this PR is that it includes a patch for the port
even though it is a workaround for a src problem.

When extracting patches from Bugzilla, we don't really have any indication
of what applies to where.  So, for the meantime, I'm reclassifying this as
a ports PR.  The patches still won't apply -- they still need to be run through
'make makepatch' -- but this will give anyone interested in this PR a hint.
