I have a very similar setup and KDE 1.0 is quite stable.  The only
problem I might point out looking at your hardware list is the S3
Virge.  There is known, intermittent problem with the S3V server when
the server exits: the screen with be filled vertical stripes and the
machine will hang completely.  Other than that, the server works well.

Watch the ~/.xsession-errors and /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm-errors files for
any hints.
