Shouldn't be inetd; inetd has no 'try again later' message, neither is it smart enough to know that the service running on port 25 is named SMTP, capitalized. (Note: I'm *not* saying it should be made "smart enough" :) This is most likely an exim error (the original post does mention using exim). It should be covered in the exim documentation.
