In former times the make.conf file has been installed in /etc when doing a fresh FreeBSD installation. It contained useful commented out options. If memory serves me right, the file isn't installed anymore by default. Is there a reason ? I regarded this as useful tro have it around under /etc, so to say "ready for use".
