Personally I think something is happening with your
hard drive, but if you really want to find out what is
going on here is what you have to do:

1. Check on the mailing list archives at
www.freebsd.org under questions to see if someone has
already have this inconvienience and has succesfully
worked it out.

2. If in the mailing list (take the search option and
make sure you select the questions mailing list) you
don't find anything then post your question (just
re-send this to questions to
freebsd-questions@freebsd.org).

The thing is Lachlan that your question should be
answered on the proper mailing list by someone not
"newbie" so you can take advantage and really have a
learning experience with different views about solving
the problem. Some of us here (not newbies) will gladly
help you out "there".
