Still not very sure, .... (I am new using FreeBSD).
I guess even I boot singel user, the disk will still be  mounted as /. 
Do I have to boot from a bootable-CD (say the installation CD)?

Boot single user and try to create the partition.  GEOM won't allow
writes to a disk after it has been mounted.
