At least 4.4 added add the extra field in the passwd file for it. It definitely was not implmented in 4.4, but it could have been defined. I know that BSDI 2.1 (or perhaps 2.0) was the first to use the class field. I'm not sure if this was the same design that was envisioned back in the 4.4 days (BSDI did pick up a lot of ex-4.4 developers from Berkeley), or something new that was developed at BSDI.
