OK, I've done that, plugging speakers or headphones directly into the lineout of the TV card, and still no sound. And I tried each with and without Audio Internal selected. Should I really be hearing something when plugging in directly? If so, then it is easy to see from this that the problem is with working the TV tuner card, not the sound card. Someone else suggested putting #define bootverbose 1 at the begginning of /usr/src/sys/dev/bktr/bktr_reg.h which I did, and after booting the new kernel I don't see anything more being logged. Below is the output of fxtv -debug startup in case it gives clues. It might be reasonable to give up about now, but has anyone got anything else to try after seeing these results? ========= Fxtv v1.03 DETECTED CAPTURE CARD(S) [DRIVER PROBES]: bktr0: mem 0xe8002000-0xe8002fff irq 11 at device 9.0 on pci0 iicbb0: on bti2c0 bktr0: buffer size 3555328, addr 0x677000 bktr0: GPIO is 0x00ffffdb bktr0: Detected a MSP3415G-B8 at 0x80 bktr0: Hauppauge WinCast/TV, Philips PAL tuner, msp3400c stereo.
