Also http://beta.yahoo.com/docs/info/faq.html#system explains their server setup: An SGI and several intel boxes. They also mention that they run a customized http server. This is a guess but I dont think that means the core code is better than NCSA or Apache or Netsite; they've probably removed a few if/else's and other general purpose feautures and replaced them with hardwired code peculiar to their setup.
