Ideally, we=E2=80=99d modernize ftpd to support TLS. The PITA with ports solutions is you immediate run into the issue of = which of the many ftp daemons is going to fit your needs and not require = some non-trivial amount of configuration. The stock ftpd =E2=80=98just = works=E2=80=99 for local user accounts and has a simple method for = blocking of swaths of users from using it if that sort of restriction is = needed. This reminds me of Apple removing the telnet client. Sure, most people = don=E2=80=99t *need* telnet, but it=E2=80=99s handy to have, both as a = simple test tool and as a way to get into old crufty network gear that = never moved on to ssh.
