Are you by any chance trying the test with i.e.:

X -config /root/xorg.conf.new

In the new Xorg this produces a black screen. This is the new 'standard'.

Try something like X -config /root/xorg.conf.new -retro (and have a look
at the updated handbook section,
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html )
