In gnome2 days, I remember someone mentioned about the busy cursor in GDM which was solved by installing x11-wm/metacity, but I thought to ignore it as this time is a different problem, a blank screen. But now, it solved by x11-wm/metacity. Thanks for the xfconf-query tips.
