Joe,

Sure, it could be made optional although I do not believe it would hurt
anything by being there.  What it buys is the ability to work with
downloaded transaction records from banks and credit card companies.  In
the future, it will support investment records from brokerage houses.
Of course, the respective institutions have to support the OFX (Open
Financial Exchange).  It is a new feature of gnucash with the 1.8.x
series.
