Rudely following my own post, I scratched around and found some answers to
my questions.

I found my '~/.xinitrc' was "exec startkde" (or close). It now says:
 "exec /usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm2"

Much better for my gasping little CPU. Starts quickly and is lively, if
modest.

I ran '/stand/sysinstall' again and I think I came out better, but the
main problem was a Cyrix 6x86 buried under KDE!
