I can't reproduce this on our 8.2-STABLE boxes. Specifically the one which is running ntpd that provides time syncing for local clients, as well as gets its source times from stratum 1/2 servers: $ uptime 5:45PM up 6 days, 2:13, 1 user, load averages: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 $ uname -a FreeBSD XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 8.2-STABLE FreeBSD 8.2-STABLE #0: Wed Sep 28 15:07:58 PDT 2011 root@XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/X7SBI_RELENG_8_amd64 amd64 1428 root 1 44 0 11900K 2860K select 0 0:17 0.00% /usr/sbin/ntpd -c /conf/ME/ntp.conf -p /var/run/ntpd.pid -f And "route -n monitor" shows no anomalies here. Maybe you should tcpdump to find out if there is a client or peer which is constantly pounding ntpd for some reason, or if ntpd is constantly nagging some peer?
