Yes, it is hairy.

You must mean gdk_imlib.2, correct?  You probably have old 
versions of libraries that the various GNOME pieces depend 
upon.  Make sure that you rebuild them all.  Check the *_DEPENDS
stuff in the Makefiles for exact dependencies, but here are 
some off the top of my head:

glib12
gtk12
imlib
ORBit
libaudiofile
libghttp
libgtop
