Got it. I've also snarfed the latest version of the handbook from
cdrom.com. The datestamp on all the files in the handbook tar file (and on
the file itself) is 19 May, which had contributed to my impression that
there wasn't much going on with the handbook. Should it not have a more
recent date? All the files in ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.ORG/pub/FreeBSD/docs/
apparently have a datestamp of 19 May.

This is what Netscape reports:

Current directory is /pub/FreeBSD/docs

Damn! I *knew* that would be something reaallly simple. Thanks.

OK.

Hmmm.. that was how I started out, with the route added in ppp.conf and not
in sysconfig, but all I got was 'no route to host' errors. After some
fiddling, I tried setting the default router in sysconfig, and it worked.
I'll try it the way you advise with the new version.

Got that too. Note though my comments about date stamps above.

Excellent. Thanks for your help. Hopefully my problem will disappear
somewhere in the process of installing the new version.

Gotcha :-)
