Well, if they're going to come to you asking for help, tell them FreeBSD, and then make sure they get it installed with the Linux compatability stuff turned on. It'll run Linux binaries. Is there anything else they all have in common except the kernel? I've seen Windows users do well with Mandrake; it seems to treat users like Windows does, trying to give them everything set up the way the authors want it, and a PITA to change.
