Vim, with or without compatibility mode, will not behave exactly like vi. Apart from using vim, which is probably the best solution, an alternative would be having a port from a different nvi tree. The issue gets even more complicated by the fact that there are multiple vi forks and all of them are slightly incompatible with each other. -- Ottavio Caruso
