FreeBSD is VERY concerned about reliability. Where Linux usually runs all disk I/O async, FreeBSD runs either sync or sync for metadata and async for data. This greatly reduces the likelihood of a major disk corruption in the event of a crash or power failure. See man tuning for a good discussion of the issues. Also turn on softupdates for all but root (/). If you want to live dangerously, turn on write cache on your disks, but this presents the possibility of a real disk disaster. R.
