To tell the truth this is a relatively new install (< 1 week), so I don't have a lot of data. Booting with media ejected gives just a 'no media present' message. This machine has been running W95/W98 for about a year in this configuration with no problems, so I'm not suspecting cable problems. The only other oddity I see with this machine is: Jul 7 18:04:05 thomas /kernel: Bad BIOS32 Services Directory! During boot up. I guess I'll accumulate some more data and see how it goes.
