It works for me.  

(dan@dan) /home/dan> cd /usr/ports/misc/rpm
(dan@dan) /usr/ports/misc/rpm> make
===>  Extracting for rpm-2.5.6
>> Checksum OK for rpm-2.5.6.tar.gz.
===>   rpm-2.5.6 depends on file: /usr/local/lib/libgdbm.a - found
===>   rpm-2.5.6 depends on executable: gmake - found

What version of FreeBSD are you running, and how old is your ports
tree?

6?  I only see two in my freebsd-questions archive (back to 1998) ;
Your first was on an apple scsi drive that doesn't seem to even be
SCSI-1 compliant.  I doubt you would be able to get FreeBSD to probe a
drive that old correctly.
