You are confusing 'use' with "boot off"

The boot code cannot get to it, but once the system is up and running it
can use that slice. of course I have NOT tried to then put a BSD
partitionning scheme on an extended slice, only used them to read DOS
filesystems or LINUX filesystems that are already there. 

what is your complete layout?
