/usr/ports/mail/imp
http://www.horde.org for a complete explanation.  Sorry no $3,500 price tag.

It is php4 though.  For perl you might just use the courier suite, smtp,
maildir, maildrop, pop3, imap, webmail, auth with sql, ldap, passwd
etc.  

/usr/ports/mail/courier
