XFree86-4 from ports (what I would call "the most recent") provides no hardware opengl acceleration on nvidia cards. The 3.3.6 XFree (the default X that is installed with FreeBSD) can get some TNT support through utah-glx (ports/graphics/utah-glx), but that will still be very slow compared to even a voodoo3 because nvidia never released enough info to get DMA working.
