I was For the benefit of search engines and techies I'll document what the problem really was. The store from whom I purchased the computer had installed a regular ATA cable (40 pin) to connect the device to the mainboard. It was very susceptible to line-noise, causing transmission errors. I replaced it with an 80 pin cable (a UDMA cable) and the drive is very reliable ever since. --=20 David Vincelli
