Go to http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/handbook341.html#694 and find the FTP site closest to you. There will be a directory 3.1-RELEASE or 3.1-STABLE and all of the files are located under the directory of your choice. There are text files to read such as upgrade, layout, and etc. You have problems with the boot blocks if you upgrade from the disk. I am able to run with the generic kernel and upgrading from floppies takes care of the boot blocks for you. There is a directory on floppies with a readme on how to generate the two floppies. I finally chose to purchase a subscription to 3.1 from Walnut Creek. I think it is faster than finding a site that isn't at the limit of ftp sessions. Once I had the CDROM, I booted from the floppies and did an upgrade. I was asked what I wanted to upgrade and from where. It started reading the CDROM and when I came back 4 hours later it was finished. I was told to remove the floppy and it would reboot. I did and when it finished booting, I was running 3.1. I found that the upgrade had replaced my .profile for root and I had to redo it. I would copy your current startup profile for root somewhere. Then after you are through upgrading, you can edit the newone and add your way of doing things to it. X-windows was running a little bit strange and so I ran XF86Setup and re-tweaked it and then everything was fine. Then I found that the upgrade had also replaced my xinitrc. I had to add "-ls" to get it to read my login scripts. I don't like 80 x 66 windows and so I reduced them back to a size that I prefer. I like blue with white text but I haven't added them back in.
