The ports system has the advantage of also including scripts which automate the downloading, unbundling and installation of the tarballs so that you can worry about more important details, like starting to use the software. If you really enjoy pain: have a look in the /usr/ports directory to find the 'Makefile' for the port you want, see where they go to fetch the tarballs, and then you could go fetch them yourself manually. Me? - I like the easy way :) PS: I used the ports collection to get php4 with Postgres support earlier this week - it's going like a Boeing now! The standard PHP4 port includes mySQL support, so you could actually use the package which is available on CD or by FTP from '/stand/sysinstall'. This is even easier than ports as the downloaded tarball contains pre-compiled goodies, and it installs everything for you too.
