Am I > wrong ??? You're getting confused. When the handbook talks about "branches", it specifically means CVS branches. At the bottom of this page is a dropbox that lists all the available branches: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/ Because of FreeBSD's development model, there are several branches that could be considered production quality at any time.
