I've experienced this issue with openoffice on freebsd both on 6.x and
now 7 current, both i386 and amd64

Every time I build the port by compiling it with:
WITH_KDE=yes LOCALIZED_LANG=it-IT JAVA_VERSION=1.5

I cannot create an openoffice file from scratch. That is, if I do:
file -> new -> text document
it opens the panel without problems.
When I try to save this new file with "save" or "save as" the dialog window
comes out, but when I click on "save" after specifying the file name it does
nothing, just stays open and no file is written.

If I open, modify and save an existing file everything works ok.

This problem appears only when I compile the port, if I install the package
everything works fine.

BTW, will a current 7 package will available anytime soon?
