The aout-compat libraries in the XF86333 distribution (/usr/X11R6/lib/aout/*) are incorrect. When I copied the libraries from a 2.2.8 CD, everything worked just fine. I'll be submitting a PR on this - but I thought I would toss out a note to inform those interested.
