ok, the missing info is:
base system:
	FreeBSD 8.2-stable amd64
and cross-compiling to
	FreeBSD 9.1-PRERELEASE i386

I have been cross-compiling since amd64 appeared with no problems (well almost 
:-).
The first time was i386 to amd64, and amd64 to x ever since.
