It turns out while running under DOS, the flow control settings in my modem got set to a meaningless value (a mix of XON/XOFF and RTS/CTS?). So it was flow control all along! Name resolution and what-not works fine. Now if I can convince my accountant (my wife) that we need the dedicated link :-) --k
