There's no studies or anything that supports a .5% response rate. Keep in mind the industry standard for paper junk mail is 1-2% response rate, so if they put in the actual response rate to spams then nobody would believe it. Setting the pitch to assume 1/2 of paper junk mail is believable to those who have never spammed before.
