I have the same problem with my EtherLink III ISA card  on my 
FreeBSD 2.2.5 before.

You can  give it a try by doing the following:
Boot your system from a DOS floppy and run the 3COM EtherLink setup 
program. 
Turn off the Auto media detect and manually set it to BNC.
Save the setting and restart the FreeBSD system.
