The more I think of it, I think we should have a link to the latest security advisories on the mainpage, as we have for the newsflash and other items. I think finding the latest security advisories on the first sight is much more important than infos about new committers or similar. I consider these things a high-priority thing, and everyone should be aware of possible holes as early as possible, e.g. when visiting the mainpage. We shouldn't care about a bad impression this might be for newcomers, but as a better and important service for system maintainers that need to stay up-to-date.
