 No, I have not done so.  I did all but one bit of that by hand
 though.  The bit I did not do was
 
 echo 'PERL_ARCH=mach' >> /etc/make.conf
 
 So, my question is then: why does the perl5 set up so that it
 doesn't work right unless unless there is a PERL_ARCH line in
 /etc/make.conf?   Seems massively counterproductive.
