Here are two data points from kernels before and after the 'big slow down':

before:

Writing the 25 Megabyte file, 'iozone.tmp'...11.398438 seconds
Reading the file...9.406250 seconds

IOZONE performance measurements:
        2299823 bytes/second for writing the file
        2786912 bytes/second for reading the file

        2353045 bytes/second for writing the file
        2940791 bytes/second for reading the file
