I am installing 4.2-Release > from CD. Does this version of FreeBSD support the Dell controller? No, FreeBSD 4.2 doesn't support this controller. There is experimental support in 5.0, but we are having major issues with what we believe to be firmware bugs. Unfortunately, the reference hardware that we have access to doesn't exhibit these problems, and nobody has been able to supply us with a Dell box to work on. > It looks like its made by Adaptec, a 7880 shows up at the beginning with > my SCSI CDROM on it, but the RAID controller tells me its the 'Dell > PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller 2/si'.... If FreeBSD is detecting the SCSI controller, something's not right. Either you don't have the RAID key installed, or you haven't set the array up properly. Either way, that won't help you yet. > Any ideas? Or do I just vinum the box? Well, a) you could send one of the boxes to scottl@freebsd.org for a month or so so that we can whack this bug for good and get support committed, or b) you could get some PERC 2/DC's from Dell. Meaning no offense to Greg, but I wouldn't be recommending Vinum for production use just yet. -- ... every activity meets with opposition, everyone who acts has his rivals and unfortunately opponents also. But not because people want to be opponents, rather because the tasks and relationships force people to take different points of view.
