Err... `dnl' stands for "Delete until New Line" --- it's used as a
commenting mechanism in files that are processed through m4(1), as
everything to the right of 'dnl' won't be passed through to the
resulting output.

Make that:

    define(`SMART_HOST', `your.gateway')dnl
